JAMAICA COLLEGE OLD BOYS ASSOCIATION OF NEW YORK - FOUNDING SPONSOR OF THE JAMAICA COLLEGE ROBOTICS CLUB AND ROBOTICS JAMAICA

 

In 2009 the Jamaica College Old Boys Association of New York  began to address Jamaica’s deficiency in science education with even more applied innovation. We got JC involved in Robotics Competitions run by US FIRST. This was done after we noted the tremendous excitement for science that robotics generated among students. We wanted this excitement for science to migrate to JC and Jamaica. Board Chairman Hon. Danny Williams was immediately receptive to the idea of a JC Robotics Club. That’s how organized robotics in Jamaica started.

10 amazing years later,  with 6 World Championships, 12 International Awards, thousands of  students engaged and millions inspired, Jamaica College Robotics has made our school and country proud.

​

As an extension of our strategic focus on national development, JCOBA-NY played a pivotal role in making robotics available to high schools island-wide, via the inaugural First Tech Challenge (FTC) Jamaica Robotics Championship (Robojam), held on 8-9 March 2019, at the Karl Hendrickson Auditorium on the JC campus. To transform this long-held vision into reality, JCOBA-NY initiated and lead the negotiations with the First Tech Challenge organization to procure the FTC franchise for Jamaica and subsequently developed the framework for a successful competition launch.

 

Robojam is definitely a game changer and will enable the promulgation of 21st century skills and innovation amongst our students. When widely deployed, its impact will be transformative for students across Jamaica and our education system.
