About the Sergeant Major (Retired U.S. Army) Richard Patterson Scholarship
The Sergeant Major (Retired U.S. Army) Richard Patterson Scholarship was established through the generosity of Richard Patterson, Class of ’85, a proud Jamaica College Old Boy whose distinguished career of service reflects the discipline, leadership and commitment that Jamaica College has long sought to instill in its students.
Through his generous commitment to the College, SGM Patterson has created an enduring legacy, one that will continue to shape the lives and opportunities of JC boys for generations to come.
The Scholarship provides financial support to deserving students in need, with priority given to members of Jamaica College’s Schools’ Challenge Quiz team. That distinction carries particular significance this year, following the team’s historic capture of the national championship for the first time in almost four decades.
In establishing the scholarship in SGM Patterson’s name, the Jamaica College Old Boys Association of New York (JCOBA-NY) seeks to connect the values that have defined his life and career, including preparation, discipline, leadership, teamwork and service, with the young men who will benefit from his generosity.
How to Apply
Eligible students are nominated by the Principal of Jamaica College and invited to complete a formal application through the JCOBA-NY portal. Applicants are required to submit a short, original 500-word essay reflecting on a moment when they demonstrated leadership or discipline under pressure.
Scholarship recipients are formally recognized during a school assembly, and scholarship funds are disbursed through the Jamaica College Foundation, ensuring transparency and accountability throughout the process.
We are deeply grateful to SGM Patterson for his generosity and, perhaps even more importantly, for the example he continues to set. His legacy reminds us that service, whether in uniform, in the classroom, in our communities or on the Schools’ Challenge Quiz stage, is among the highest expressions of the JC spirit.
